Play Day Summary from the last play day of the season...

October 5, 2008

FALL MEMBERSHIP PLAY DAY ---BRRRRR!!!!

BRRRR ---- As is always the possibility with fall, the weather can be unpredictable.  We had a breezy sunny morning and then we all nearly froze by mid-afternoon.  But … that didn't stop the FUN…..  with about 58 entries, and lots of spirit, we concluded our third Play Day of the season.  And, to add to its success, we increased our membership for the third time during these events.

Before the weather took us down, the riders completed all the individual events and once again beautiful trophies were given to the High Point winners.  The High Point winners for our Fall Play Day were:  Tracy Paitrick in Walk-Trot; Taylor Peterson in Pee-Wee; Nicki Moore in Juniors; Shaelyn Smolke in Intermediate; Autumn Murphy in Senior; and Lisa Marchetti in 35 plus.  Congrats to all of you and a great way to end the season.

You should have seen the Lead Line riders … absolutely adorable.  These will be our Pee-Wees of the future.  It just wouldn't be a Play Day without these little ones and their parents/siblings racing them around the events.  Always a good time!!

In addition to our trophy winners, everyone was awarded a door prize just for registering and being a member.  Once again, we had many local businesses who were very generous in giving donations.  We thank everyone and every business who provided a door prize this past season.  It's never too early to start getting door prizes for next season, so if you have ideas, let me have them; or, if you want to provide door prizes, just let me know.

Most important to me were the many volunteers (parents, riders, spectators) who never hesitated to come forward when help was needed.  You truly have no idea how YOUR help makes the entire event run smoothly.  I cannot begin to name everyone who helped (mostly because I am inept with names), but rest assured, we COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU.  THANK YOU!!!

I was impressed with the desire and drive of the riders who wanted to brave the weather to the end (which meant the open catalog and grain races), but there were enough of us who were frozen to the bone that we just couldn't quite get there.  There is always next season, and we'll be sure to get those super fun events in.

Until next season, THANK YOU to all the volunteers.  THANK YOU to all the participants.  Finally, THANK YOU for making this event a success and watching out for each other.

Until next May, have a warm and safe winter and if you can find the time, join us at the monthly Board meetings and the annual Board Meeting dinner at the Proctor Blackwoods in January.  Not only do you get great food, but it's great company too.  We had such a great turnout last January, it was what inspired me to move forward and take on the responsibility of putting on the Play Days.  It's a great time to meet new folks and find an area of interest you might want to pursue for using the DFA.

As always, feel free to e-mail me with your thoughts, ideas, availability to help, etc.  This is YOUR Play Day.  My e-mail address has changed, you should now e-mail me at:  frink4733@yahoo.com  (be sure to put PLAY DAY in the subject line so I don't accidentally delete your e-mail); or, you can call me at 218-729-4733 (no later than 9 p.m.).

Thank you all,

Carol A. Frink,

DFA Vice President and

Chairperson, Play Day Committee

DFA PLAYDAYS:

What a great day for a play day!  Despite it being August, the weather was cool and comfortable for the horses and riders.  We had about 54 riders (some riding multiple horses) and lots of new members.  The play day ran very smoothly thanks to all the volunteers that helped behind the scenes and to Carol Frink who organized it all.

Thanks so much to the following for their part in our play day:

·         Thanks to the 4-H for having a concession in the poultry barn – the taco’s in a bag and hot dogs tasted soooo good!  We hope you made some good money for the State Fair Horse Show trip coming up in September.

·         Thanks to all the members who pitched in and kept up on the clean-up in the parking area and arena.  All that clean-up during the day helps so much at the end of the day!

·         Our donators!  Thanks to

Keep your calendar open for Sunday, October 5th for the last play day of the year.  Remember, if you are a current year member – there is absolutely no cost for you to ride all day long, win some ribbons and take home some great door prizes.  See the attached show bill to know what events will be held that day.  Also keep in mind that the race track has their end of year celebration that weekend – but ending on Saturday night.  There may be some racer people parked by the arena.  (Those that spent the night.)  Don’t block them in – they will be leaving the morning of our play day.  Carol Frink will also be needing volunteer help from our members to make everything go smoothly.  Helped needed would include; office help, announcer, gate keeper and ring crew.  If you can help – call Carol at 218-591-6625 or 218-729-4733 or drop her an e-mail at frink4733@yahoo.com
