It's time to plan for the 2010 play days! Fresh faces are dropping in and they have been planning! Tentative (unapproved) dates for the 2010 play days are: May 8, July 17 and maybe sometime in August - date TBD. A game night on July 16th is also being talked about. Interested in helping out? Drop an e-mail to proctorarena@yahoo.com and we will let you know when the next meeting date is set. Remember that in 2009 all three play days were free with your 2009 membership! 2009 membership was $15/person, maximum of $30 per family - what a deal! 2010 membership rates did not change... what a deal! |
October Play Day Summary, by Carol Frink
THE WEATHER DOESN’T STOP A TRUE HORSE LOVER
BRRRRR!!!! It was definitely chilly on our Fall Play Day, but amazingly, we had more riders than any of the previous five play days. We had 80 entries, 18 new memberships. Yippee!! And, the sun did tease us when it appeared and disappeared in the afternoon.
Bonnie had her usual wonderful fare of eats and we managed to end our day with smiling faces and a clean arena and grounds. Thank you everyone. I hope this was a fitting end to your riding season.
Our high point winners this Play Day were Walk/Trot – Tracey P.; Pee Wee – Kaija J.; Juniors – Zoe F.; Intermediate – Haley P.; Senior – Jen H.; Senior Plus – Amy M. And what a treat for our Senior Plus winner, this was her first time at the DFA and she had just signed up as a new member.
Remember, we will be awarding trophies for the Year-End High Point. You never know who the winners might be; there may be some surprises, it’s all in the points -- so we encourage all to come and bring a treat to the October 23 (6:00 p.m.) Pot Luck at the Solway Town Hall on Highway 2 when we present the trophies.
This is our first time having the year-end awards and if it proves successful, it can become a regular part of our end-of-the-year events.
I saw cameras clicking quite a bit. Remember to send Julie your photos for including in upcoming newsletters and online on our website. Just send them to proctorarena@yahoo.com.
I want to personally thank all of the folks who participated and assisted in the smooth running of the Play Day. Volunteers were plentiful and greatly appreciated. From a young man sawing a pvc pole to shorten it for our pole weaving event, to our gatekeepers and ring help, all of you make the event run smoothly.
Since this was my last Play Day as a manager, I especially want you all to know how wonderful it has been working with each and everyone of you. I have made many new friends. Truly, without you, these events could not occur. By the time the show was over and the arena cleaned up, the outside grounds had already been cleaned and I was home for supper.
A special Thank You to Wendee Churchill – she has announced all of my Play Days for 2008 and 2009. It has been a pleasure to sit with her and learn about the announcing end of the event. Maybe we can convince her to come back and announce for our future Play Days!!!
I hope that you will form a new committee and continue to have such wonderfully successful Play Days. I will be around to help out, answer questions, and do as much as I can to continue helping make these Play Days successful and fun for all the members. If you wish to contact me about the operation of the Play Days, please feel free to call me (218) 591-6625 or e-mail me: frink4733@yahoo.com and I will be happy to tell you how I have handled it. I’ll be around.
Come to the Board/Member meetings each month and jump on the bandwagon to continue making our arena a great place for horse lovers/dog lovers, etc. to come.
I hope to see you all at the Pot Luck on October 23 at 6 p.m., future board/member meetings, and our annual board meeting dinner in January 2010.

Play Day Rules and Modifications
With below exceptions, DFA Play Days will follow ASCA rules. These rules are subject to modification as needed by the DFA Board of Directors.
Registration closes in a class before the next class begins.
Cannot have different rider on same horse in same age event (a horse cannot compete against itself).
Three calls for rider, with final call being announced as "Last" call. If no one advises announcer that rider is coming, announcer will call the next rider.
Flat bat for Western / crop for English and hands behind the cinch/girth. No hitting in front of saddle under any circumstances.
Can have two different horses with same rider in same age group.
Unless rider tells gatekeeper to close gate, gate will be open (open gate means you can run in and run out).
Walk-Trot -- cannot cross enter categories in same event.
Horse may be ridden in each age group by a different rider.
Lead Line and Walk-Trot, some courses will be shortened.
Lead Line only, same horse can be used multiple times with different riders on same horse.
Lead Line Entries -- Because lead line is for the young or inexperienced Rider, if you enter the Lead Line level then that is the only level you can ride in for the day's events. If you can ride without assistance, then you should enter into your appropriate age group.Lead Line Entries -- Must have Halter and Lead Line (for safety).
Dress Code -- Boots/heeled shoes required. No midriff showing. No tank tops. No baseball hats. Long pants required.
Plus 5 for each knocked pole or barrel.

July Play Day Summary...
HAS IT EVER BEEN NICER!!
I thought we were truly blessed when we had a beautiful day for our season opener in May, but then July came along (usually a very hot and muggy month) and once again, the weather was mild, sunny, a touch of rain in the morning, but overall, a perfect riding day (of course, the fact that July was a record breaker for cool temperatures probably had something to do with it). As has been the standard these past several play days, the members were plentiful, new memberships plentiful, and all the volunteers, members and riders were awesome.
As for excitement beyond the normal, we had one senior member experience the ground up close and personal as her horse decided to give her a toss onto the arena sand. Fortunately, she (and her horse) were fine, just a bit shook-up.
An unfortunate event which occurred was that Bonnie's concession was vandalized the night before so when they arrived to set up for the Play Day, they discovered complete destruction of their food and surrounding area, including broken glass, destroyed soda canisters, candy stolen, food destroyed. However, with the help of numerous individuals, Bonnie was able to open her concession in time for the lunch crowd, much to everyone's joy. By mid-afternoon, she was back behind the counter and conducting business as close to normal as possible. I think it goes without saying, but if anyone has a clue as to who committed this act of vandalism, please report it to the police. Thank you again to all who helped get Bonnie's concession back up and running.
This Play Day offered the added bonus of a jackpot for the Keyhole event. Payout was: First Place--$140.00 to Haley P. on Chesney; Second Place--$70.00 to Brooklyn B. on Dixie; Third Place--$42.00 to Shaelyn S. on Bullet; and Fourth Place-- $28.00 to Autumn M. on Spirit. Congratulations to you all!
As a reminder, we will be awarding trophies for the Year-End High Point. At the end of this season a special presentation for the Year End High Point will be held. Details for this will be announced. We anticipate it will be near the end of October and hope you will join us for the presentation of these trophies (and to enjoy a good meal).
Our high point winners for the July Play Day were: Walk/Trot: Tracy P. on General; Pee Wee: Sophie F. on Prince; Junior: Brooklyn B. on Dixie; Intermediate: Haley P. on Chesney; Senior: Jen H. on Sierra; and Senior Plus: B. Kutsi on Lord Remington. Congrats to all of you.
As I mentioned in our last article, we want everyone to be safe and have fun, and again, we encourage the use of helmets and proper riding gear for your safety.
My personal thanks goes out to all of the folks who participated and assisted in the smooth running of the Play Day. Without you, these events could not occur. We again ask that at the end of each Play Day (or any event you're involved in), remember to not only clean up around your own area, but as a member, please take pride in keeping the entire area cleaned up. Working as a team is the key. This help is appreciated beyond words.
Look for the October 4 Play Day show bill. I hope we can end this season as successfully as we began it.
As a final note on my part. I will be resigning as the Play Day Manager after the October 4 Play Day and resigning as Secretary of the Board at the end of the year. I hope that someone will step up and fill these roles. I will be around to help out, attend meetings, assist with any transitions, but due to other commitments, I will not be able to fill these roles after the 2009 season.
For those interested, if you wish to ask me about the duties for either of these roles, please feel free to call me (218) 591-6625 or e-mail me: frink4733@yahoo.com and I will be happy to tell you how I have handled them. Both have been fulfilling and I have made many wonderful new friends and acquaintances.
I hope to see you all on October 4.

IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY TO RIDE A HORSE!!
Could we have been more blessed than we were on Saturday, May 23, 2009, our season opener membership Play Day. The weather was perfect. The members were plentiful. The horses were out to stretch their legs. I'm not sure what more we could have asked for.
With the beginning of my second season as a Play Day Manager, I was a little apprehensive (which is my nature). I worried, would the weather hold? Will anyone show up, after all, it is the Memorial Day weekend? and, Would everyone be going to the WSCA show in Barnum instead of coming to the Play Day? Well, an hour after I arrived to get things set up, all those worries were gone. With the help of my co-manager Jennifer Bergquist, and all the volunteers (too numerous for me to count), we managed to have a safe and fun Play Day. Our announcer, Wendee Churchill, as always did a wonderful job. Thank you to our ribbon girls. We were fortunate to have several young ladies assist with handing out the ribbons to our riders.
We faced the challenges of the arena with flexibility and creativity (and most of all, good spirit). The frost boils in the center of the arena altered the set-up of some of events and we unfortunately had to forego 4-in-line. But, there is always next Play Day, where we will change it up a bit with a couple of replacement events (yet to be determined), and add one jackpot to the list. The July 18 show bill will be posted in the near future, so keep checking the website. We will also be adding to the Play Day section our Play Day Rules.
As an added bonus, this season will have included a year-end high point.
Our high point winners for the May Play Day were: Walk/Trot: H. Psyck on Boo; Pee Wee: K. Jezierski on Audrey; B. Bergquist on Dixie; Intermediate: H. Psyck on Chesney; Senior: J. Hovde on Sierra; and Senior Plus: K. Carl on Cash. Congrats to all of you.
A moment or two of excitement (for me personally) came up when our pony, Cocoa, decided to see if she could rear up to full height with my daughter on her. Fortunately, all turned out safe and well. It is a reminder, however, that we do encourage the use of helmets and proper riding gear for the safety of our rider members.
My personal thanks goes out to all of the folks who participated and assisted in keeping the grounds cleaned up during and at the end of the day. Without you members/volunteers, we simply wouldn't be able to have these events.
Keep your eyes peeled to the website for the next show bill for the July 18 Play Day. We look forward to seeing you and can only hope that the weather will be as beautiful then as it was this time.

FALL MEMBERSHIP PLAY DAY ---BRRRRR!!!!
BRRRR ---- As is always the possibility with fall, the weather can be unpredictable. We had a breezy sunny morning and then we all nearly froze by mid-afternoon. But … that didn't stop the FUN….. with about 58 entries, and lots of spirit, we concluded our third Play Day of the season. And, to add to its success, we increased our membership for the third time during these events.
Before the weather took us down, the riders completed all the individual events and once again beautiful trophies were given to the High Point winners. The High Point winners for our Fall Play Day were: Tracy Paitrick in Walk-Trot; Taylor Peterson in Pee-Wee; Nicki Moore in Juniors; Shaelyn Smolke in Intermediate; Autumn Murphy in Senior; and Lisa Marchetti in 35 plus. Congrats to all of you and a great way to end the season.
You should have seen the Lead Line riders … absolutely adorable. These will be our Pee-Wees of the future. It just wouldn't be a Play Day without these little ones and their parents/siblings racing them around the events. Always a good time!!
In addition to our trophy winners, everyone was awarded a door prize just for registering and being a member. Once again, we had many local businesses who were very generous in giving donations. We thank everyone and every business who provided a door prize this past season. It's never too early to start getting door prizes for next season, so if you have ideas, let me have them; or, if you want to provide door prizes, just let me know.
Most important to me were the many volunteers (parents, riders, spectators) who never hesitated to come forward when help was needed. You truly have no idea how YOUR help makes the entire event run smoothly. I cannot begin to name everyone who helped (mostly because I am inept with names), but rest assured, we COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU. THANK YOU!!!
I was impressed with the desire and drive of the riders who wanted to brave the weather to the end (which meant the open catalog and grain races), but there were enough of us who were frozen to the bone that we just couldn't quite get there. There is always next season, and we'll be sure to get those super fun events in.
Until next season, THANK YOU to all the volunteers. THANK YOU to all the participants. Finally, THANK YOU for making this event a success and watching out for each other.
Until next May, have a warm and safe winter and if you can find the time, join us at the monthly Board meetings and the annual Board Meeting dinner at the Proctor Blackwoods in January. Not only do you get great food, but it's great company too. We had such a great turnout last January, it was what inspired me to move forward and take on the responsibility of putting on the Play Days. It's a great time to meet new folks and find an area of interest you might want to pursue
for using the DFA.
As always, feel free to e-mail me with your thoughts, ideas, availability to help, etc. This is YOUR Play Day. My e-mail address has changed, you should now e-mail me at: frink4733@yahoo.com (be sure to put PLAY DAY in the subject line so I don't accidentally delete your e-mail); or, you can call me at 218-729-4733 (no later than 9 p.m.).
Thank you all,

AUGUST 23RD PLAYDAY SUMMARY
What a great day for a play day! Despite it being August, the weather was cool and comfortable for the horses and riders. We had about 54 riders (some riding multiple horses) and lots of new members. The play day ran very smoothly thanks to all the volunteers that helped behind the scenes and to Carol Frink who organized it all.
Thanks so much to the following for their part in our play day:
· Thanks to the 4-H for having a concession in the poultry barn – the taco’s in a bag and hot dogs tasted soooo good! We hope you made some good money for the State Fair Horse Show trip coming up in September.
· Thanks to all the members who pitched in and kept up on the clean-up in the parking area and arena. All that clean-up during the day helps so much at the end of the day!
· Keep your calendar open for Sunday, October 5th for the last play day of the year. Remember, if you are a current year member – there is absolutely no cost for you to ride all day long, win some ribbons and take home some great door prizes. See the attached show bill to know what events will be held that day. Also keep in mind that the race track has their end of year celebration that weekend – but ending on
Saturday night. There may be some racer people parked by the arena. (Those that spent the night.) Don’t block them in – they will be leaving the morning of our play day. Carol Frink will also be needing volunteer help from our members to make everything go smoothly. Helped needed would include; office help, announcer, gate keeper and ring crew. If you can help – call Carol at 218-729-4733 or drop her an e-mail at frink4733@yahoo.com
